The future of cybersecurity

The research activities carried out under Project NFP401101C360 – Research and Development of Advanced Artificial Intelligence Solutions for Cyber Threat Detection and Defense Against Sophisticated Attacks introduce new approaches to detecting sophisticated cyber threats through the use of machine learning and behavioral analysis.
The project focuses on the development of methods and tools for the reliable detection of advanced cyberattacks. Particular attention is given to attacks involving vulnerability exploitation, lateral movement, and privilege escalation, in accordance with the MITRE ATT&CK framework. The research also examines the limitations of existing detection approaches and explores ways to improve their accuracy and effectiveness in real-world environments.
A key component of the project is the comprehensive analysis of tactics, techniques, and procedures. This includes identifying their distinctive characteristics and investigating the tools commonly used by attackers to execute cyberattacks. The project also incorporates the simulation of cyber incidents within a secure testing environment to validate and evaluate different detection scenarios.
Another important area of research is the behavioral analysis of cyberattacks based on forensic and network data. The objective is to identify Indicators of Compromise and Indicators of Behavior, as well as to determine operating system and network communication parameters that can improve the detection of cyber threats.
A significant part of the project is dedicated to the design of new detection models based on machine learning, AI, and mathematical modeling. These models are intended to detect anomalies and cyberattacks across multiple stages of system compromise. The research also focuses on optimizing model performance, with particular emphasis on detection accuracy, sensitivity, and computational efficiency.
Beyond its research objectives, the project contributes to strengthening expertise in the field of cybersecurity. The research outcomes will be progressively integrated into university courses focused on cybersecurity, information security, and data analytics, helping prepare the next generation of cybersecurity professionals.
